May 20th

God, it was a pretty quiet day, and I got some good work done preparing for Sunday.
Tried something a little different, invited folks to an "End of the World" party given some of the questions and doubts caused by one Harold Campings prognostications, but no one came. I realize it was last-minute, but I'm still disappointed. Sometimes it's hard to try something new and fail completely. I'm thankful, though, that Anna was with me and we had fun together. Bless her Lord, with continued joy and improved health, and help me be the best dad I can. Thanks for David too, as he continues his big adventure in PEI. Bless him, his friends and all the teachers and support folks with a time of joy and learning.

Thanks, God, for an interesting Bible study. We got off track, but we had a chance to talk about some of the issues that have people thinking and that mean a lot to the church.
We talked about rumours of the end of the world, and what it means for us, as well as accepting different folks in the church. I just pray that you can help us learn and grow together, and that what we've talked about helps me discern how to lead and how to back off.
I thank you for feeling better as well, and for the good walk I enjoyed today. Help me continue to get back to full strength so that I can continue to serve you and be the best family man I can be.

God, there are a lot of questions about claims that your Judgement Day is going to happen this coming Saturday, and I pray for the wisdom to see your truth, and not that of some deluded self-proclaimed prophet. Help me deal with the folks that are afraid and confused and to understand your truth, whatever it may be.

Lord, I'm back in the office and back to things as usual after my retreat, and I thank you both for the time away and for being back.
I ask that as I start my week you bless me with what I need to do your work and to be a blessing to the folks at St. James.
I also pray that you keep making my back better.
Thanks for the folks that work with me at St. James. Keep them enthusiastic and strong for your work.

God, thanks for a busy day of delivering kids and doing little chores. Thanks also for the relief provided by my Chiropractor and for the slow healing that's taking place in my back. I just ask for the patience to get better and not push too hard.

May 15th: Un-Control Freak

I like planning ahead. As much as possible I like to know what I’m doing well in advance so that I can be fully prepared when the doing needs to be done. Take Sunday’s worship services, for example. I try to have them prepared well ahead of their actual delivery date. This gives me a great deal of creative freedom and helps ensure that they are fresh and new and worthy of God’s attention. Right now, for example, I know roughly what I’ll be preaching on through to the end of June. Well, OK, two of those Sundays are out of my hands, but generally, I have the Message topics picked out and I’m starting to figure out what music fits in with those ideas.
Of course, there are times when I’m not in total control. This Anniversary weekend the Pulpit is in the hands of our guest speaker, the Reverend Doctor Harvey self. Next weekend I’m on study leave, so that Sunday worship will be led by our own Reverend Lillian Wilton. This is a bit of a challenge for me, because I have to leave things in the hands of other highly capable people. I know this in my head. I feel it in my heart. I have no problem entrusting the congregation to trusted friends. Still, it’s hard, not because I have to be in control, but because I’m used to being in control. I realize it’s a subtle distinction, but it’s where the heart of my discomfort lies.
Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t have to be in control of everything. While I made the arrangements for our 50th Anniversary guest speaker, the rest of the plans for the 50th have been in the hands of our 50th Anniversary Committee. Other than offering words of praise and encouragement and asking how things are going once in a while, I’ve happily let the committee do their work because they are doing a great job, having fun doing it, and I know I don’t need to be running or even assisting every single operation of the church. In other words, I am an Un-control Freak. I like to be informed of what’s going on, I like to be in control of the things that are my strict responsibility, but I don’t have to control every little or big thing.
Being a leader of sorts, I feel sorry for God, the ultimate leader. I realize that God could do everything I and all my colleagues do, in addition to doing all the things that church committees and sub-committees do, in addition to doing everything that all we humans do, but He doesn’t. Instead, God gives us a great deal of control for things big and small. Sometimes things go very well and I’m sure please God. Sometimes they don’t and I’m certain they cause God a great deal of pain and disappointment. Still, God trusts all of us to do what is right, to do what is honourable, to do what is loving and kind.
God is nothing if not the greatest Un-control Freak. That’s what allows us to be fully human, even if it means making quite a few mistakes. Our saving grace is that God is also the Ultimate Forgiver, a task that is His and His alone and for which, thankfully, He has total and absolute control.

Thanks, God, for an interesting day. Worship at Emmanuel was interesting, but not inspiring. The topic seemed far too negative and the Pastor too stiff. The music was good, though, but still, worship itself was flat and I missed not being in the lead.
Back it still bad, so I need lots more patience.
Thanks for getting the kids safe back and for both of them having enjoyed their time away.

May 14th

It was a beautiful day today, God. I thank you for some private time with Lois, and the fact that David and Anna both seem to be enjoying their weekends.
I can feel my back starting to go south, so help it heal, Lord. Give me the patience I need to let it get better, and the strength to keep doing what needs to be done.

May 13th

Thanks God, for the week's retreat and for Lois' support. Now help me get back to work and to life and to moving forward in the direction you seem to have set.
