May 29th: Such a shame

Now that it is clear that certain doom and gloom predictions about the world are not coming true, the person that made those promises has kind of apologized and sort of recanted. The exact nature of what this character said or even his identity and exact form of malfeasance are not really required. I could, after all be talking about just about anybody who has ever blown it in a rather big, public way.
Now, don’t be too embarrassed; if you’ve ever done something that simply couldn’t be hidden, you’re not alone. All of us have, at one time or another, or (and I know this for certain in my own case...) on more than a few occasions, have managed to make rather large public spectacles of ourselves. Well, OK, I’ve never actually blown it on national TV or on international billboards placed in front of millions of people, but some of my boo-boos have been pretty open.
When we blow it and can’t hide it it’s best just to own up to our mistakes and carry on as best as possible. Rather than denying the truth or making light of it, we have to accept responsibility for our action. That’s pretty obvious, but it’s not always done. Take, for example, the gentleman that inspired this set of thoughts. He made some pretty bold public statements about a pretty big subject that affected many people in hurtful ways. This guy, however, glossed over his sin. Rather than admit that he had hurt a lot of people he passed it off as not being his responsibility. In other words, his apology was no more an apology than this little document is a thousand page novel.
He’s not alone in his half-baked confession of sin. I know first hand how hard it is to own up to my mistakes. I also know that is true for many others; admitting we’re wrong seems to be just about the hardest thing we can do. And ladies, it’s not just a guy thing. Men and women, boys and girls, young old and in-between, admitting our guilt is something we all find hard to do.
That’s a shame, because there’s no real way to hide from our mistakes. Oh, sure, friends, family and neighbours may not know what you’ve done, but God does. God knows the full extent of the way we’ve sinned and how that sin has hurt us and those around us. But if we share the full extent of our sin with God honestly and freely, He won’t stop loving us: He’ll release us from it. He’ll forgive us. He’ll wipe the slate clean and help us move on.
That might be pretty hard to believe, because sometimes we make pretty big mistakes. But God’s love is bigger than our sin, and there is no way He would want us to suffer for what we’ve done. It’s a shame, then, that we’re so afraid or unwilling to own up to our mistakes to Him. By not confessing and apologizing whole-heartedly, we miss out on God’s wholehearted, cross-borne display of love for us.

May 28th

Lord, it was a very good day. Enjoyed spending the day with Anna and Lois as we went to the Temple Board breakfast and then Retrofest. I'm feeling much better and the weather was pretty good today, so you truly deserve the thanks.
Help me rest up tonight so that tomorrow's flurry of activity can be all be to your glory and honour.

May 27th

Lord, I'm feeling a lot better and had a really good day. Thanks. Thanks also for the trust people place in me and for the gift you have given me to listen to their stories. Help me to keep serving this way, and to be able to debrief as I need to.

May 26th

Lord, another day of feeling lousy, but at least a little less lousy than yesterday. Thanks for inspiritnng me as I get ready for the next few weeks of worship. Help me continue to grow in faith and my leadership. Thanks also for the support I've been receiveing and the good people I get to work with. Please bless them with the wisdom and faith they need to keep serving St. James as we try to serve you and our neighbours.

May 25th

It was a quiet but productive day, Lord, but I still feel lousy. The back is better, but my cold seems at it's peak and I'm just plain tired.
Help me heal so I can be ready for Sunday.

May 24th

A busy day at work today after a good session with the Chiropractor. I'm glad we're making progress with the search for a Music director, and I pray for your blessing on the work we're doing and the person that we'll be interviewing.
Help us keep on track and moving where you want us to be.
Thanks for the time with Chris as well. Help him in is quest, whatever it might be, and as helps me develop some videos to use for outreach.
Thanks for making my back better day by day.

May 23rd

God, it's been a good day, kind of quiet, still kind of sore. David came home safely after his trip to PEI, he enjoyed himself and met some good people, so I thank you for that. I also thank you for the time I had with Anna and Lois.
All I ask is that you help me get better and more back to normal.

May 22nd: Reputable

Spam is both a delicious lunch product and an undesirable email or message. Well, OK, for people like myself Spam is a delicious lunch product. Other, less discerning folk don’t think so highly of the stuff. That’s why unpleasant emails became associated with a lunch meat. While I feel that’s an entirely undeserved slight on the tasty meat concoction, I’m willing to concede that it’s not for everybody, so I can accept Spam being associated with something nobody likes.
That’s the power of a reputation. Spam has a bad one, making it a logical choice to be connected with bad things. A good reputation, on the other hand, is highly desirable. Here’s an example of that importance.
Just the other day I received an unpleasant message from a friend. The friend, however is a known quantity. She’s a very nice person so I immediately knew that something was wrong. In fact, I was completely certain that the message had not come from her directly. The second I realized the strange combination of an unpleasant message from a very pleasant young lady, there was no doubt  in my mind she was innocent.
That’s the power of a good reputation; when someone normally associated with ‘nice’ appears to be doing something associated with ‘naughty’ your mind immediately registers a disconnect. Good does not lead to bad so someone with a good reputation gets the benefit of a very large doubt before being associated with something bad. In the case of my friend, it turned out that someone had snuck the naughty message into her Facebook account and that she was indeed totally innocent. The net result was a few embarrassing moments for the young lady, but her good reputation remained intact and unsullied.
I like to think that God always assumes that we have very good reputations. Yes, I know that we often disappoint God with the reality of our actions, but thanks to the power of forgiveness, every time we do sin, it’s like a new thing to our heavenly redeemer.
It works like this: God is willing to forget our past mistakes and hope for the best when we are forgiven. His love keeps no account of forgiven wrongs. Every time we turn to God, admit our errors and turn away from them, He resets our Sin-counter and starts all over again. That’s what forgiveness does for us. It temporarily gives us a perfect reputation in the eyes of our creator and puts us into His good books. We might not keep it very long, we might not even deserve it when we do get it, but God loves us too much to let us live with a bad reputation, as long as we’re willing to own up to the truth of what we might have done to earn it.

May 22nd

Thanks God, for a great day of worship. It felt good and people responded well, and I pray that it was worthy of you.
I thank you also for my back slowly getting better, although it's still touchy.
Finally, thanks for a good dinner with Lois as we finally celebrated our 26th anniversary. Help me continue to work on our marriage and to move forward together.
Help me also to plan worship and work with my Worship committee to see to it that we meet the needs of the congregation as together, as your church, we seek to meet both your needs and the needs of the community around us.
Finally, God, help us find the right person for our Music Director and our After-School Program leader.

May 21st

Thanks God, for a hot, productive day. My back is a bet better, so I was able to work around the house and relax with Anna and Lois.
