Lord, it was a tough day in a couple of ways; my back was so sore starting in the morning I had to cancel a couple of things I enjoy doing, ministries that I believe make a difference for folks.
Thankfully I was better enough to be able to have a coffee with a couple of folks that have left St. James, but that didn't go as well as I'd prayed for. I know we're still good friends, and that is a great gift, but they're probably not coming back and it does feel like a blow.
I just pray that you help them continue in faith wherever they go and that you will help us build a strong, healthy friendship, because I do need friends outside my work.

God, thanks for a good, productive day. Thanks also for the safe arrival of a new baby to a family in our church, especially after a bit of a scary start for her.
Lord as this child grows and matures and becomes part of the life of St. James, help me be a better father to my own children and to remember them as the valuable, wonderful gift they are.
I especially give you thanks for Shannon and the great interview we had with her. She is such a joyful, enthusiastic person, and perfect for our new position of After-School Program Director. Thanks for sending her to us, and I pray that under her we will truly make a difference to the kids in our community.

Thanks God, for a good, short Session meeting, and for getting the go-ahead to hire Darryl as our new music director. I ask for your support, guidance and blessing on me and St. James as we make Darryl part of the family. Help him grow into his new position, and help us make him feel welcomed and loved.
Thanks as well for the Pastors of Excellence opportunity; help me make the most of it and to be receptive of their teachings.
I also ask for your help tomorrow, as we interview the candidate for our After School Program. Bless Shannon with the ability to impress us and our little team with an open mind and receptive heart.

God, it feels like some real progress has been made with my CD. I'm not thrilled with my voice on it, but at least it's getting done. Help me be a good leader so that it can get finished and I can start doing something with the new music that's floating around in my head.
June 5th: If I had...
I am blessed to be able to help folks in different ways. As the Pastor of a small congregation I have the honour of serving the folks that make up my church in a very direct way. In this role I also have the ability to help folks just outside St. James either through financial aid or simply by being a caring presence in the community.
Of course, I get lots of thanks from the people of St. James and the people beyond its walls. I’m not in it for the praise or thanks, but it’s nice to hear. One other thing I get from folks not directly associated with my church is a promise. Almost every time I’m able to reach out with a food voucher or simply a bit of time sharing God’s love I get a promise that the person I’ve helped will be out to church the next Sunday. Sometimes they go even further and assure me that whatever I’ve donated will be paid back as soon as possible.
Reality strikes pretty quickly, however, and I have never, ever seen one of those promises fulfilled. Of all the money I’ve donated for gas, hotels, bus fare, meals or food vouchers, not one cent has ever been returned. In the same vein, I have never seen the face of someone I’ve helped this way sitting across from me in the Sanctuary the following Sunday.
Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t care if I’m never paid back or if no one ever shows up to church after having helped them out. Simply being able to help is truly and honestly all the reward I ask for. Knowing that folks are willing to turn to the church and that in turn our church can help is a wonderful thing. It is a blessing and a good use of our gifts to be able to touch lives this way. Hearts may not be transformed permanently, but at least we are able to plant the seed and that’s good enough for me.
God must hear a lot of promises that are never fulfilled. I’m sure that prayers to Him often sound more like bargains than simply requests or humble pleas. Help me and I’ll do this. Cure me and I’ll do that. Get me out of this mess and I’ll clean up someone else’s mess. God, however, doesn’t bless us or answer prayer because of what we promise; He does it because He loves us. It’s that simple and direct. Jesus didn’t save us from sin because of what we could offer Him in return. He did it because it was the only way we could be released from its curse.
If I had a nickel for every time someone broke their promise to either pay me back or show up in church, we’d be building a new elevator or doing some pretty amazing mission work right now. That’s not that case, and it doesn’t matter. If we fulfilled all the promises we made to God I imagine that the world would be a very different and better place. That’s not the case and it doesn’t matter. We are blessed by God out of His love and nothing more. We don’t deserve it and we can never pay it back. The best we can hope for is to do our best as often and as lovingly as we can.

Lord, thank you for a great day of worship and time with friends. Thanks for the way Lois played and for the enthusiasm of the singing from the congregation. Help us keep praising and serving you with joy.
Thanks also for the friends that are helping with my CD. Let it be a fun project that can also raise funds to help out the family and to do some good works through the St. James and the PCC.

Thanks, Lord for a fun wedding and for being able to put St. James on the map for a few folks. I especially pray for one of the young ladies that seems to be struggling with her faith and life. Help her find a home at St. James, to be part of the family so that she can take her faith a step forward.

A bit of a crazy day today, with lots to do and a little confusion in timing, but I thank you that I made it through everything. Thanks for the show with TK Cabaret and for the people we entertained. As I get out in the community for my own things, help me find ways to bear witness to what you do for me and how you can make a great, positive difference in everyone's lives

God, it was a good, but tiring day. In some ways the reality of our choices for a music director are just starting to sink in, so I'm asking you again to give me the patience I need as the process unfolds. Help us all do what we need to make our worship both glorious for you and what folks need in the community.
